About Mixon Tax Law Firm

Mixon Tax Law Firm didn’t emerge from a calculated business plan or corporate strategy. Attorney Phillip Mixon built this Houston-based practice around a straightforward observation: people facing serious tax problems deserve both sophisticated legal expertise and genuine personal attention—not one or the other, but both. When clients work with Mixon Tax Law Firm, they’re not navigating a massive downtown operation where cases become file numbers. They work directly with Attorney Mixon, and that’s by design. The firm has witnessed what happens when clients get shuffled between different lawyers and staff members—critical details vanish, deadlines slip, and clients pay the price. The practice operates on one foundational principle: when someone’s financial future hangs in the balance, they deserve representation that combines technical mastery with direct accessibility.

Background & Big Four Experience

Phillip’s career began at one of the Big Four accounting firms, where he developed his skills in the Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) tax department. At his previous employer’s firm, he played a central role in advising clients on the tax implications of corporate transactions, ensuring compliance and optimizing tax outcomes during high-stakes deals. His Big Four experience provided invaluable insights into the complexities of tax law and corporate finance, which he now leverages in his current practice.

Those years at his previous firm involved corporate transactions worth hundreds of millions of dollars, where precision was mandatory and deadlines were immovable. That demanding environment taught him how to identify workable solutions under extreme pressure—a skill that serves his clients exceptionally well when facing IRS disputes or complex tax controversies.

Current Practice Focus

Today, Attorney Mixon focuses his practice on IRS and state tax controversy matters. His extensive background enables him to expertly handle disputes with taxing authorities, providing strategic advice and representation to individuals and businesses facing audits, assessments, and other tax-related challenges. Whether negotiating with the IRS, contesting state tax determinations, or navigating complex tax regulations, his clients can trust they’re in capable hands.

This controversy experience informs the tax planning advice he provides—he understands what triggers IRS scrutiny and how to structure planning to minimize audit risk while achieving optimal tax results.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Practice & Approach

Attorney Mixon holds both CPA and law licenses, which is highly unusual. Most tax professionals can handle either the accounting side or legal representation, but not both at an expert level. When clients face serious tax problems, they need someone who can see the complete picture—what went wrong with the numbers and how to fix it legally.

He grew frustrated with clients getting shuffled between different people and important details getting lost. When someone’s financial future is at stake, they deserve to work directly with the attorney handling their case, not get passed to junior associates.

Both, and they’re connected more than people realize. The firm has seen business tax problems destroy people personally, especially with trust fund recovery penalties. Having someone who understands both sides has literally saved clients from bankruptcy.

Everything from individuals with audit notices to business owners facing multi-million dollar disputes. The benefit of keeping the practice small is that every client receives Attorney Mixon’s personal attention, regardless of how complex their case is.

Background & Experience

It means when the IRS challenges a tax position, he can analyze the accounting that created the problem and fight for clients legally. Most practitioners can only do one or the other, which leaves gaps in defense that can prove costly.
His previous career experience taught him how to handle incredibly complex situations under extreme pressure. Those skills translate perfectly to IRS disputes—he knows how to find solutions when everyone’s panicking and the stakes are high. Plus, he learned sophisticated strategies that he can now apply for small business owners.
Yes, and that’s a significant advantage. As a licensed attorney, he can take cases all the way to federal court if needed. CPAs and enrolled agents can’t do that, so if a case gets complex, clients would have to start over with someone else.
IRS audits, collection actions, business owners getting hit with personal liability for payroll taxes, and international compliance issues that people didn’t even know they had. Each one requires a different approach, but they all benefit from having both accounting and legal expertise.

Working With Clients

Clients talk directly to Attorney Mixon. He handles his own phone calls because he needs to understand what’s happening with cases immediately. When clients have questions or urgent issues arise, they’re not going through assistants who have to “check with the attorney.”
The firm reviews all notices and paperwork, explains what’s really happening in plain English, and determines the best options. No legal jargon, no sugar-coating—just straight talk about where clients stand and what can be done about it.

Yes, because the firm understands that tax problems usually come with money problems. Payment arrangements can be structured that make sense for clients’ budgets while still providing the representation needed to resolve issues.

Attorney Mixon keeps clients updated on case developments, and when they call with questions, he actually answers. The firm doesn’t believe in leaving clients in the dark wondering what’s happening with their cases. Clients are already stressed about their tax problems—the last thing they need is to wonder if their attorney even remembers their name.

Results & What to Expect

During consultation, Mixon reviews your complete tax situation, analyzes IRS correspondence, and evaluates your financial position. You’ll receive honest assessment of your options, realistic explanation of potential strategies, and clear discussion of next steps. The firm provides direct answers to your questions and straightforward guidance on the best path forward.

The firm’s controversy experience actually makes it better at planning. Attorney Mixon knows what triggers IRS scrutiny and how to structure things to minimize audit risk while still achieving clients’ goals. It’s like having inside knowledge of what gets people in trouble.
That’s exactly why clients want an attorney handling things from the beginning. Attorney Mixon can take cases wherever they need to go, including federal court if necessary. Clients won’t have to start over with someone else or worry about gaps in their representation.
